Marilyn Downs - Biography

Artist Statement

My paintings are inspired by the beauty and power I find in the natural world. All of my pieces are drawn from personal experiences, from places where I have spent time and have been moved by what I saw and felt there. I also work as a psychotherapist and often notice that images from nature come to mind while I'm working with someone - images that, to me, symbolize something they are wrestling with, or perhaps something they need - a quiet harbor, a steep climb, a tree bending in a storm but still firmly rooted, a winding path. I find the drama, complexity and beauty of nature endlessly inviting to explore.

Making art has been a part of my life since I was very young.  I have experimented with various media - drawing, painting, pastels, ceramics - and found each of them interesting in different ways. But there were long periods when I wasn't making art; the rest of life would occupy me until I realized I missed creating something visual, and I would start again. Eventually, I realized that I needed to approach my process differently.

In 2018, I decided to focus on the medium that felt most viscerally compelling to me - painting with oils. With this approach, I've kept going ever since.  Over the years, I've taken classes and workshops at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the DeCordova Museum School, the Umbrella Arts Center, and Concord Art Association, among others. I've had many wonderful teachers, most recently Lois Andersen, Tim Horn, David Lussier, Peggy Immel and Natasha Isenhour,  and I'm grateful for what they each have taught me. I look forward to wherever this painting adventure takes me next.
